Local Multi-Agent Swarms: Disconnected Coordination via Sub-8B Specialist Weights

Authors:Solstice-AI Research Team
ABSTRACT

Multi-agent systems typically rely on cloud APIs for inter-agent communication. We present LocalSwarm, a framework for orchestrating multiple air-gapped specialized sub-8B models (Coder, Planner, Verifier, Critic) communicating over local Unix domain sockets with zero cloud dependency. LocalSwarm achieves 91.7% of cloud-based multi-agent quality on software engineering tasks while operating entirely on a single workstation with 32GB RAM.

1. Introduction

Multi-agent AI systems use specialized agents (Coder, Planner, Verifier) that collaborate to solve complex tasks. Current implementations rely on cloud APIs for inter-agent communication, introducing latency, cost, and connectivity dependencies. LocalSwarm runs all agents locally on a single workstation.

2. Architecture

2.1 Agent Specialization

Agent Model Size Role Specialization
Coder 7B Code generation HumanEval+, MBPP+
Planner 3.8B Task decomposition Step planning, reasoning
Verifier 3.8B Code verification Test execution, AST validation
Critic 3.8B Quality assessment Code review, bug detection

2.2 Communication Protocol

Agents communicate via Unix domain sockets using a JSON-based message protocol:

{
  "from": "coder",
  "to": "verifier",
  "type": "code_submission",
  "content": "def solve(x): ...",
  "metadata": {"language": "python", "confidence": 0.87}
}

2.3 Orchestration

A lightweight orchestrator (Python process) manages agent coordination:

  • Task decomposition: Planner breaks the task into subtasks.
  • Code generation: Coder generates code for each subtask.
  • Verification: Verifier runs tests and AST checks.
  • Iteration: Critic identifies issues, Coder fixes them.

3. Experiments

Metric Cloud Multi-Agent LocalSwarm Gap
SWE-Bench 42.3% 38.8% -3.5%
HumanEval+ 74.1% 69.2% -4.9%
Task Completion 88.7% 82.1% -6.6%
Average 68.4% 63.4% -5.0%

4. Conclusion

Local multi-agent swarms achieve 91.7% of cloud quality with zero cloud dependency, enabling autonomous AI collaboration on air-gapped workstations.

The key insight is that specialist sub-8B models can collaborate effectively through structured communication, approaching cloud-based multi-agent quality.
