Deterministic Trace Attribution: Cryptographic Checksums and Lineage Tracking in Open Corpora
Open distillation corpora lack provenance tracking, making it impossible to trace which teacher model generated each reasoning trace. We present TraceChain, a provenance standard that embeds SHA256 checksums, source model identifiers, generation seeds, and quality metrics directly into Apache Parquet dataset metadata. TraceChain enables deterministic reproducibility of any reasoning trace, attribution of training data to specific teachers, and quality auditing of synthetic datasets. We deploy TraceChain across the Project Solace corpus (12.5M traces), providing full provenance for every trace.
1. Introduction
Open distillation corpora like Project Solace aggregate reasoning traces from multiple teachers, but lack provenance tracking. Without provenance, it is impossible to:
- Trace which teacher generated a specific reasoning trace.
- Reproduce a trace to verify its quality.
- Audit the diversity of the training data.
- Attribute improvements (or failures) to specific teachers.
TraceChain provides a comprehensive provenance standard that embeds tracking information directly into dataset metadata.
2. The Provenance Standard
2.1 Per-Trace Metadata
Each reasoning trace in a TraceChain-compliant dataset includes:
{
"trace_id": "sha256:abc123...",
"teacher_model": "gpt-5.6-sol",
"teacher_version": "2026-08-15",
"generation_seed": 42,
"temperature": 0.7,
"top_p": 0.9,
"input_hash": "sha256:def456...",
"output_hash": "sha256:ghi789...",
"quality_score": 0.94,
"verification_status": "passed",
"verification_method": "unit_test + ast",
"timestamp": "2026-08-19T14:32:00Z",
"dataset_source": "solace-v1.0",
"license": "AGPL-3.0"
}
2.2 Cryptographic Integrity
TraceChain uses SHA256 checksums for:
- Input integrity: Hash of the prompt/question.
- Output integrity: Hash of the complete reasoning trace.
- Dataset integrity: Merkle tree hash of the entire dataset.
Any modification to a trace changes its hash, making tampering detectable.
2.3 Lineage Graph
TraceChain maintains a lineage graph that tracks:
- Which teacher generated each trace.
- Which filtering steps were applied (entropy filtering, AST validation, deduplication).
- Which verification methods were used.
- The quality score at each stage.
3. Implementation
3.1 Parquet Integration
TraceChain stores metadata in Apache Parquet’s sidecar metadata format:
dataset.parquet # Reasoning traces (text)
dataset.parquet.metadata # Provenance metadata (JSON)
dataset.parquet.checksums # SHA256 checksums
3.2 Reproducibility
Given a trace’s metadata (teacher model, seed, temperature), TraceChain can reproduce the exact reasoning trace by:
- Loading the specified teacher model.
- Setting the random seed.
- Setting the generation parameters.
- Generating with the original prompt.
3.3 Query Interface
TraceChain provides a SQL-like query interface for provenance queries:
SELECT * FROM solace WHERE teacher_model = 'gpt-5.6-sol'
AND quality_score > 0.9 AND verification_status = 'passed'
4. Experiments
4.1 Deployment
We deploy TraceChain across the Project Solace corpus:
- Traces tracked: 12,586,893
- Metadata storage: 2.3 GB (0.017% of corpus size)
- Checksum verification time: 4.2 hours (full corpus)
- Reproducibility rate: 100% (for open-weight teachers)
4.2 Quality Auditing
TraceChain enables quality auditing that reveals:
- Teacher-specific quality distributions (GPT-5.6 Sol: avg 0.91, DeepSeek V4 Pro: avg 0.89)
- Dataset overlap across teachers (14.3% semantic redundancy detected)
- Filtering pipeline effectiveness (each step’s contribution to quality improvement)
5. Analysis
5.1 Metadata Overhead
The provenance metadata adds 0.017% to the total corpus size, making TraceChain essentially free in terms of storage overhead.
5.2 Attribution Accuracy
TraceChain’s per-trace attribution enables accurate analysis of teacher contributions:
- GPT-5.6 Sol contributes 18.3% of traces but 22.1% of high-quality (>0.95) traces.
- DeepSeek V4 Pro contributes 16.8% of traces but 19.4% of math-focused traces.
6. Conclusion
Open distillation corpora need provenance tracking for reproducibility, attribution, and quality auditing. TraceChain embeds SHA256 checksums and lineage metadata directly into dataset files, enabling deterministic reproducibility and per-trace attribution with 0.017% storage overhead.
The key insight is that provenance is essential for scientific reproducibility in distillation datasets, and cryptographic checksums provide tamper-evident tracking at minimal cost.
